My Aching Back!

As noted earlier, weeding my perennial bed behind the house is mostly a process of rock-removal.  I am pulling out an assortment of rocks ranging from small stones the size of an ice cube to rocks as big as a bowling ball.  The photo below shows a grandfather stone dug out two days ago, with my flip-flop for comparison.  This is really hard on the back!

The garden is slowly getting planted.  This week I put in six new daylilies received from Solaris Farms in Wsiconsin.  I hope all survive.  I'm giving them a drink every day, and we're supposed to get some rain during the first part of the coming week.

Tomorrow night we have the regular monthly meeting of the Presque Isle Township Trustees, plus a special Trustees meeting to discuss the future of one of our two fire departments.  (These are private non-profit volunteer departments.)  Department No. 2 suffered an embezzlement a couple years ago which the administration at that time did not respond to in an appropriate manner.  Their dereliction led to an unrecovered loss of $70,000.

Now the Township Trustees are punishing the current administration — which had no role in the loss — by withholding their operating funds.  Department No. 2 could go bankrupt and shut down unless the Trustees take action to prevent it.  There is a lot of political animus mixed in which simply makes this situation more difficult to resolve.  A group of us are doing our best to get residents to attend this meeting and make their wishes known. •••
