Fifty years and two days have passed since Martin Luther King's speech before the Lincoln Memorial. As so many have noted this week, much has changed... and much has not. It is particularly distressing to see states enacting restrictive voting laws to protect us against the non-existent threat of voter fraud. Conservatives demand photo IDs, make voter registration more difficult, reduce days when people can vote, force voters in poor communities to stand in line for hours, and much more. Their goal is suppression, not purity, of the vote.
Conservatives are setting themselves up for a fall. Minorities will not soon forget who it was who tried to keep them from exercising their right to vote, and Republicans will suffer for this. It's not just unfair; it's plain dumb politics. •••
