After watching the Weather Channel for a couple hours this morning, I decided to scrub my trip to Virginia. It's not clear at the moment if Virginia will be open for business this week!

Hurricane Sandy is likely to be a "storm of the century" by the time it blows itself out over Canada. The fringe effects are expected to reach as far as St. Louis, MO. Michigan's Lower Peninsula should get nicked, too. Wind warnings have been issued for the Thumb and a stretch of the Huron shore above Saginaw Bay. Winds of 30 mph, with gusts to 50, are expected, perhaps mixed with some snow, across much of the state.
Late last week it seemed Sandy might make landfall farther north, sparing southern Virginia. But today it looks like the Roanoke area is at high risk for losing power (due to high winds working on trees), and the part of West Virginia I would have crossed is forecast to have 1-2 feet of snow. Clearly, this isn't the time for a visit to my kin!
As noted, Sandy has been styled "Frankenstorm." I guess that not just hype! •••
