Ice Caves

This winter has seen the largest percentage of ice cover on the Great Lakes in 20 years.  If temperatures remain as they are, we will be close to 95% iced over.  That amount of ice produces some fascinating effects, including ice caves along the Lake Michigan shore in the Northwestern Lower Peninsula.  These are accessible only during unusually cold years when the shore is frozen and you can walk to the caves.  Check out the YouTube video of these ice caves by clicking here.

For the truly adventuresome, there is the Christmas Tree Trail at the Straits of Mackinac.  When the water at the Mackinac Bridge freezes over, enthusiasts put out Christmas trees to mark a trail from the mainland to Mackinac Island, so folks crossing over don't get lost — or drown.  This is not my idea of a sane escapade. •••
