On Sunday evening I had the honor of officiating at the interment of Wally Haggard. Wally passed away last year. With his entire family present, he was laid to rest in St. Andrew's Chapel at Camp Chickagami, a place he and Joan especially loved.
Joan is an accomplished church musician, and has spent most of her career on the organ bench. However, she and I became friends as we worked together on the Camp Chickagami Task Force in the days before the Dioceses of Michigan and Eastern Michigan split. The Camp was and remains a shared passion. Together with other Task Force members, we helped save the property from liquidation and worked to build Camp Chick into a stable family camping center.
In addition to her Task Force Work, Joan and husband Wally would spend a couple weeks here each summer. Wally's love of the outdoors and nature made this an especially happy annual pilgrimage. Here he found no end of places to explore and things to discover. It is so fitting, then, that the Camp's outdoor chapel should be Wally's final resting place.
