CNN carried a story this morning about likely auroral activity. We may see the aurora tonight. According to the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks:
A large, Earth-facing solar event occurred on Jan. 7, 2014. The effects of this event should reach Earth sometime on the 9th of January. Our short term forecast is not available, so you should watch the Current Aurora Activity panel at the Auroral Forecast website: http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroralForecast
The CNN story said the aurora might be visible as far south as Kentucky. If you are in a dark-sky area, and skies are clear, you might take a look tonight, especially after midnight (when it will be Jan. 9th!), or perhaps the following night. •••

Thanks, John, for the note on the aurora. I haven't seen it since a magnificent display in Watertown, NY in 1992-3(?).
