Reorganizing

Last night I was one of 17 people who attended a meeting to reorganize the Democratic Party in Presque Isle County.  The county party has been inactive since the former chair fell ill and eventually died.  That made us one of only two counties in the state without a county-level party organization.  The other is Wayne County — Detroit and nearby communities — and they have "Democratic clubs" as an alternative.  Presque Isle County has finally come in out of the cold.

As an officer of the county party, I must be a dues-paying,
card-carrying, bleeding heart member of the state party.

The Micigan Democratic Party sent Andy, a field organizer, to help us get our act together.  We quickly agreed that my friend Sharon will serve as chair, and I agreed to be secretary.  More minutes to write!  My heart rate slows to zero just thinking about it.

We also listened to a presentation by Robert Kennedy, a retired teacher who is running for the Michigan House of Representatives from the 106th District.  Bob gave us background on himself, and then outlined his positions on issues ranging from the Governor's raids on the school aid fund (in order to balance the budget) to fracking.  His opponent in the district is entrenched and will not be easily dislodged.  The next few months will be fascinating! •••
