File this under random but someday maybe useful information. When Mabel of the North (but her friends knew her as Dances with Skunks) ran afoul of Mephitidae Mephitis, we tried the traditional tomato juice remedy and about everything else anyone at Camp Chickagami could think of, e.g., chicken soup, martinis. Nothing worked. Then the veterinarian at Rogers City gave me a little bottle of de-skunking elixir which you dilute in water and sponge over the dog. The odor was immediately reduced to at least a tolerable level and soon faded away. However, as the vet warned, for the next six months, whenever Mabel got wet you could still smell a hint of skunk. (Ever wondered what Chanel No. 1 smelled like?)
So, if your pet gets skunked, forget the tomato juice — and the V8, Clamato, and Diced Tomatoes with Southwest Chilis — and see your vet immediately. He/she has the right stuff. •••
